Whether you are facing tough deadlines at work or difficulties in the family, everyone goes through stressful times at some point in their lives. Knowing how to overcome and adapt to adversity, tragedy, and trauma is known as resiliency, and this skill helps you remain strong and grow through life’s challenges. The following guide teaches stress management tips to help you become more resilient.

1. Reframe the Problem

In the face of uncertain or tragic circumstances, you may be tempted to dwell on the negative. Resist this urge and practice positive thinking instead. You can’t control everything in your situation, so try to focus on what you can and think about ways to improve your situation. For example, if you did poorly on a project at work, consider what went wrong and what you can do to improve your performance next time.

2. Build a Strong Support System

Positive, healthy relationships support resiliency and remind you that you are not alone. Strengthening relationships with people you trust and who care for you is a critical part of stress management. Whether you’re sharing your worries, asking for advice, or simply taking your mind off an unpleasant experience, you may find it easier to cope when you make genuine connections with the people around you.

3. Take Care of Your Body and Mind

Your physical, mental, and emotional health are important no matter what happens in your life. Find time to burn off stress with exercise, eat a balanced diet, and get plenty of sleep every night (the CDC recommends at least 7 hours for adults). When your body and mind are fueled and well-rested, you will be better prepared to take on whatever obstacles await you with a clear head. 

Don’t forget to relax and work in some calming hobbies and activities as well. Read books, listen to soothing music, try breathing exercises, or take a warm bath. Engaging in activities you enjoy is a great form of stress management.

4. Set Reasonable Goals

Finding purpose and accomplishing your goals can help empower you. Set daily goals, big or small, that you can reasonably meet. Push aside thoughts of what you can’t do and focus on ways to contribute to your ambitions or help others. Even the smallest accomplishments can motivate you to keep going and strive toward your other goals.
